The Archives du Centre acadien was founded in 1972 and contains the most historically extensive primary and secondary resources in the Province. The most prestigious primary resource held by the Archives is the original Catalogue of Families of St. Mary’s Bay (Clare) of 1818-1829, as well as the original Fabric register dating from 1799, as authorized and compiled by Father Jean Mandé Sigogne, the first resident priest of the area.

The Archives du Centre acadien also houses the most complete and varied collection of Acadian documents in Nova Scotia. Archival material deals primarily with Nova Scotian Acadians of both pre and post deportation periods, with the latter forming the bulk of the collection. The collection also contains a large number of rare books and maps, again pertaining to Acadians and dating from 1755.

Completing the inventory, the Archives also house a substantial genealogical bank covering the majority of Acadian family names of southwestern Nova Scotia.

Awards the Archives have received:
1997 Carmen Carroll Award, the highest award from the Council of Nova Scotia Archives for archival conservation.
