Shaar Shalom Synagogue

MANS

1981 Oxford St., Halifax

The Shaar Shalom congregation sprung from the original Baron de Hirsh (Orthodox) community. Their congregation was established in 1953 and the synagogue dedicated in 1954.

Shaar Shalom is an egalitarian congregation where both women and men participate fully in the spiritual, ritual and social life of the community. They are affiliated with the United Synagogues of Conservative Judaism, and maintain close ties with the Conservative and Masorti movements in Canada, the United States, Israel and the world.

The sanctuary holds approximately 340 worshipers. This space can conveniently be converted to a social hall complete with stage. The building also has three classrooms, a library, two social rooms, and kitchens.

The congregation helps manage the affairs of the Agudat Achim synagogue in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

Religious schooling is provided for pre-school to grade seven congregant children. Pre-school, grades primary, one and two meet on Sunday morning. Grades three through seven also meet on Sunday as well as two afternoons a week.

Services are held on all the Jewish Holidays: the schedule is available from the office.
